ROAR

Local Schools take part in the Lions International Roar competition

During the Autumn term The Meads, Crawley Down C of E and Copthorne Junior C of E schools took part in took part in the Lions International Roar competition. Roar is an exciting ‘ideas’ competition for children aged 7-11 years. The programme has been running for 9 years and is sponsored by Lions Clubs across the UK. It is run and organised by the award-winning education ideas company 8 billion ideas who have designed lesson plans for the teachers which are tailored to the National Curriculum.

Children are challenged to ‘think big’ and come up with ideas that could change the world and people’s lives for the better!

EG Lions Club members, Jill Pyper and Pat Grimshaw and Lions volunteer Alice Griffiths made regular visits each school to help them with their planning and prototype making. Club President, Nick Gibson, presented the winning teams at each school with their certificates and medals.

The format of the competition is rather like the tv programme ‘Dragon’s Den’. Children had to think of a problem in the world that they would like to solve. In groups they planned their invention, made a prototype model, presented their idea; explaining its benefits, how it works and made a jingle to accompany it.

Each group was awarded marks and the winning group then submitted their idea via video to be entered into the District Finals. Pictured are the overall winners chosen to represent the Meads School in the next round.

Thanks to all three schools, their Heads, teachers and children for entering the competition with such enthusiasm.
