ROAR
Local Schools take part in the Lions International Roar competition
During the Autumn term, Dormansland Primary and St Mary’s C of E Primary schools took part in the Lions International Roar competition. Roar is an exciting ‘ideas’ competition for children aged 7-11 years. The programme has been running for 8 years and is sponsored by Lions Clubs across the UK. It is run and organised by the award-winning education ideas company 8 billion ideas who have designed lesson plans for the teacher which are tailored to the National Curriculum.
Children are challenged to ‘think big’ and come up with ideas that could change the world and people’s lives for the better!
EG Lions President, Sharan Billings presented the winning team (The Golfer) with their certificates and medals. The group made a golf club that had a compartment containing grass seed to fill-in divots, balls which turned into fish food should they land in a pond and an electronic ball tracking device so no more lost balls.
The format is rather like the tv programme ‘Dragon’s Den’. Children had to think of a problem in the world that they would like to solve. In groups they planned their invention, made a prototype model, presented their idea; explaining its benefits, how it works and made a jingle to accompany it. Each group was awarded marks and the winning group then submitted their idea via video to be entered into the District Finals. Thanks to Miss Watts and her class for entering the competition with such enthusiasm.
St Mary’s School also entered the competition with their Yr 5 and Year 6 classes. Below are some of their planning ideas and photographs of their prototypes.
